Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 29, 2026
qooq inc. ("we", "us", or "our") respects the privacy of the people who use the iOS app "ReadItWiser" and its related website (together, the "Service"). This policy explains what information the Service handles, and for what purposes.
Overview — our core principles
- No account is required. We do not collect personal information such as your name, email address, or phone number. An anonymous identifier is simply issued automatically when you start using the app.
- We do not track you across other websites or apps. We do not request App Tracking Transparency (ATT) permission and do not use the advertising identifier (IDFA) for tracking.
- Highlights and notes are stored only on your device and are never sent to our servers.
- We process only the minimum information needed to run the Service.
1. Information we process
- Anonymous user identifier (UserID): an ID issued automatically by Firebase Authentication's anonymous sign-in. No registration or personal information is required.
- Saved article data (user content): the URL, title, excerpt, extracted body text, site metadata, and originating app of the pages you save, together with AI-generated summaries, tags, scores, and analysis. This is stored in the cloud (Cloud Firestore) for cross-device sync and AI processing.
- Highlights and notes: stored only in a local database on your device and not synced to our servers. As a result, they do not transfer when you change or reinstall your device.
- Purchase / subscription status (PurchaseHistory): the state of your App Store subscription and ticket purchases. Payment details such as card numbers are processed by Apple and are never received by us.
- AI usage: aggregate values such as monthly token usage and request counts (for quota and billing management).
- Push notification token: a device token used to send notifications such as batch AI review completion (only if you allow notifications).
- Usage analytics: aggregate events such as feature usage, onboarding progress, and ad display (Firebase Analytics). We do not use these to identify you personally.
2. Purposes
- Providing the Service (saving, extraction, offline reading, full-text search, summaries, translation, and sync).
- Sending requests to an external API (OpenAI) for the cloud AI feature (deep critical-reading analysis).
- Managing usage quotas and determining billing status for subscriptions and tickets.
- Preventing abuse and API misuse (Firebase App Check / App Attest).
- Improving the Service, diagnosing issues, and producing usage statistics.
- Sending notifications (when allowed) and providing support.
3. On-device AI vs. cloud AI
The Service's AI features are split into two layers, which are handled differently.
- Apple Intelligence (on-device): generating an article's summary, tags, genre, and reading-value score, as well as Reader translation, is processed on your device. Article text is not sent to our servers or to OpenAI for these purposes.
- GPT-5.4-mini (cloud): only when you run "Inspect with AI", or run Pro batch analysis, is the target article's body text (up to the first 16,000 characters) sent to OpenAI via our Cloud Functions and the analysis returned. This does not run automatically.
4. Third parties (processors)
We send the data necessary, within the stated purposes, to the providers below. Each provider handles data under its own privacy policy. We do not provide information to other third parties outside these purposes, and we do not sell data.
- Google (Firebase): Authentication (anonymous), Cloud Firestore (storage of article data), Cloud Functions (relaying AI processing), Cloud Storage, App Check, Cloud Messaging (notifications), and Analytics (usage statistics).
- OpenAI: sending article body text for cloud AI analysis. Content is limited to processing via the API and is not used to train OpenAI's models (API usage).
- Apple: in-app purchase processing, SKAdNetwork (ad measurement that does not identify you personally), and App Attest (abuse prevention).
- Google AdMob: delivering ads to free-plan users. We do not perform cross-app tracking via ATT; ads are delivered primarily on a SKAdNetwork basis. Handling of AdMob-originated data follows the AdMob / Google policies.
5. Data location and international transfer
The Service's cloud features (Cloud Firestore, Cloud Functions, etc.) run in a United States region (us-central1). By using the Service, you are deemed to consent to your data being stored and processed on servers outside Japan (in the United States).
6. Retention
Saved articles are stored against your anonymous identifier and are deleted from the server when you delete them within the Service. Data that becomes unreachable due to uninstalling the app or discarding the anonymous identifier may be removed by periodic processes. Highlights and notes are stored only on your device and are lost when the app is removed.
7. Your rights and data deletion
- You can delete saved articles individually within the app at any time.
- If you want your account (anonymous identifier) and all associated data deleted, contact us via the in-app settings or the form below. We will delete your data including saved articles, the AI queue, and authentication links.
- You can always take saved articles out of the app by copying, sharing, or exporting Markdown from the Reader.
8. Advertising
The free plan shows ads via Google AdMob. Subscribing to Pro removes ads. As noted above, we do not perform cross-app tracking (ATT) or IDFA-based tracking.
9. Children
The Service is not directed to children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has used the Service, we will promptly delete the related data.
10. Security
We use measures such as Firebase App Check (App Attest) for genuine-app verification and access-control rules to help prevent unauthorized access and abuse. However, no transmission or storage over the internet can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy in response to changes in law or the Service. If there is a material change, we will announce it in the app or on this page.
